What is Letterle?

Letterle is a two-player word game in Italian. It has been played since the 16th century and is still very popular today.

It is played on a standard letter-sized grid, and the goal is to make words out of tiles. The player with the most points at the end of a game wins. The game has a wide range of rules and variants, but they all revolve around making words out of tiles, and you'll see those mechanics repeated in nearly every rule below.

Because there are an infinite number of possible combinations of the 26 letters available in English, you can play indefinitely without repeating any words (although you might get the same word if you keep playing again and again). However, each category only has six-letter tiles. This keeps things interesting, but it limits your ability to specialize in any one area. 

Game Rules

Here's how to play Letterle with two people:

You begin by reading a numbered list of words, each slightly different from the others. The first player writes down as many words as they can that begin with the first letter of the list. The second player reads each word and looks for a match in their list. After all of the players have submitted their answers, the list is usually read again and new words are added until no one can think of any more new words and only their old answers remain on the board. Once you've used all of the letters in your answer, you must discard your letter card and draw another from the same pile.

- Find the hidden word in each attempt.
- Each attempt must include a four-letter word.
- The colors of the letters change after each attempt; the green letter is correct, while the grey letter is incorrect.
- To increase interest and curiosity in attempting to reveal the letter to which you have been challenged, the game allows you to post the results on social networks while depicting the series of attempts with colors but without revealing the letter.
