Notwordle

What is Notwordle?

Notwordle is an inventive spin-off of the popular word game Wordle. While the objective remains the same—guessing a five-letter word—the mechanics and clues are different, adding layers of complexity to the game. Instead of relying solely on letter placement and color-coded tiles, Notwordle challenges players to interpret additional hints, such as Scrabble scores, word frequency, and ladder length. These clues require careful analysis to connect your guess to the correct word within ten attempts.

Rules of the Game

  • Objective: The goal of Notwordle is to correctly guess a five-letter word within ten tries. Each day presents a new puzzle with a unique word to uncover.

  • Making a Guess: Start by entering a five-letter word. After each guess, you’ll receive feedback in the form of color-coded tiles and additional clues located to the right of the word. These clues help you determine how close your guess is to the correct word.

  • Color-Coded Tiles: Similar to the original Wordle, the tiles will change colors based on the accuracy of your guess:

    • Green Tile: A letter in the guess is in the correct position in the word.
    • Yellow Tile: A letter in the guess is in the word but in the wrong position.
    • Gray Tile: A letter in the guess is not in the word.
  • Interpreting Clues: In addition to color-coded tiles, Notwordle provides several unique clues to help you narrow down the correct word:

    • Estimated Scrabble Score: This shows the difference between the Scrabble score of your guess and the solution.
    • Alphabetical Matching: This compares the alphabetical order of your guess and the solution, helping you understand how close they are in the dictionary.
    • Word Frequency Comparison: Based on the n-gram dataset from Google Books, this clue compares how frequently your guess and the solution appear in the text.
    • Shortest Ladder Length: This clue indicates the number of letter changes needed to turn your guess into the solution. For example, the ladder length between "SHINY" and "STING" is 4 (SHINY → SHINE → SWINE → SWING → STING).
  • Winning the Game: Successfully guess the correct word within ten tries to win the round. If you fail, the correct word is revealed, and you can try again the next day.

Tips for Success

  • Understand Scrabble Scores: Familiarize yourself with Scrabble letter values to make better use of the Scrabble score clue. Knowing the typical scores for common letters can help you estimate how close your guess is to the correct word.

  • Pay Attention to Alphabetical Order: Use the alphabetical matching clue to determine how close your guess is to the solution in the dictionary. If your guess comes before or after the solution, you can adjust your next guess accordingly.

  • Utilize Word Frequency: The word frequency comparison clue can help you determine if your guess is more or less common than the solution. This is especially useful when deciding between multiple possible guesses.

  • Analyze Ladder Length: The ladder length clue provides valuable insight into how many changes are needed to transform your guess into the correct word. A shorter ladder length indicates that your guess is closer to the solution.
